Perfect for a walk

Aggertal dam

The Aggertalsperre is a lake in the centre of the ‘Oberberg dam region’. It stretches across two arms and is ideal for leisurely hikes and walks with a view of the water. Various water sports are possible here, and you can swim and dive to your heart’s content at the Bruch lido. There are also a number of rowing and pedal boats available for a tour of the lake. The ‘Energy Trail’ themed hiking trail from the ‘Streifzüge’ series starts and ends at the dam wall of the Aggertalsperre and takes you up into the mountains to the most wonderful views over our beautiful homeland.

Homburg Castle

Homburg Castle is located just 25 kilometres southwest of Bergneustadt near Nümbrecht in the Homburger Ländchen region. Surrounded by woods, meadows and open countryside, this castle is now primarily a cultural and historical museum, a popular excursion destination and a place steeped in history. First mentioned in a document in 1276, its appearance has changed constantly since then; in the 17th century it took on the appearance of a baroque castle that still characterises it today. The ensemble also includes the Red House (former tithe barn), the forester’s lodge and parts of the historic mill and bakery.

Observation tower on the Beul

The idea of building a viewing tower was first mooted in Bergneustadt back in the 1950s. However, the tower was not opened until 1982. 447 metres above sea level, the tower itself is around 30 metres high and has a viewing platform at a height of 26 metres. On a clear day, the observation tower offers a view as far as the Rhine plain to the west, the Ebbegebirge mountains to the north-east and the Westerwald forest to the south. The viewing tower can be reached on foot via hiking trails and is located to the north of Bergneustadt, not far from the Hackenberg residential area.
